Hi. I’m Lorie Marrero, and today’s Clutter Video Tip is Part 4 in our five-part series on time management. We have captured a lot of information, we have committed to which information we’re going to move forward with, we have cued ourselves to take action on those commitments, and now we’re going to talk about completing the work. So, now you’ve had that reminder cue you, and you just need to do it and maybe you just don’t wanna. So, you have to think about why – why did you commit to this in the first place? There are a few reasons that things typically get done. One is that something is essential. Something’s going to explode, children will starve, customers will not get their orders, it must get done. And those kinds of urgent and important things are relatively easy to cross off your list.

Then you have the things that are evident. Things that are internally motivating to you. So you’re going to brush your teeth every day because you want to brush your teeth, it’s something you like doing. You might eat healthier because you’re motivated internally to feel better and take better care of yourself. And then there are things that get done because there is an external motivation. Something is nagging at you, there’s a deadline in place, there’s a consequence, or maybe even a reward, a big bonus that you might get. Or maybe you’re even thinking about that evaluation from your manager.

But often when something’s not getting done, an external motivation needs to be put into place artificially to make you get it done. We talk a lot in my program about accountability partners, and there’s a good reason for that. I wrote my book, Clutter Diet, with the help of my accountability partners that I’ve had literally for over 10 years. I would have to get up in the morning at 5:00 o’clock and e-mail them and say, “I’m up, I’m writing,” and I had to answer to them, and it was the only way I got it done. Even though it was important to me, I just needed that extra boost. So, I’d like to ask you what would be that extra boost for you to get some of those things done on your list? Finally, you might even think about another letter E, and that is “eliminate.” If you’re not getting it done, maybe it really doesn’t align with your goals. And maybe it’s something that isn’t as urgent as you thought. And sometimes that’s what works. You just cross it off the list and move forward.

If you need help with accountability, we provide accountability every day in our Member Message Board area in our program at clutterdiet.com/learnmore. You can read about this and you can find out how we’ve helped thousands of people in over 18 countries to get it done.

See you next time, and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.
