Hi, I’m Lorie Marrero, and today’s Clutter Video Tip is about what I call habit hooks. It’s the idea that you’re trying to create a new habit so you hook it on to a habit you already have. A great example is flossing when you brush your teeth at night. So, my favorite example of habit hooks is cleaning out your car when you are filling up with gas. Right now, I’ve got the gas pumping and I have my trash that I’ve cleaned out of my car. And there’s already a trash can right there.

Another great habit hook is to clean out your refrigerator of leftovers that might be spoiling on the day before your trash comes to get picked up. That way you won’t have smelly things in the trash bin in the garage for a week until they come back.

And finally, on the days that you pay your bills, a great habit hook to add on is to clean out your purse as well. I always find things like receipts and business cards and other action items as well as cleaning the trash out of my purse and organizing it in general.

Would you like to have a customizable e-mail reminder system to set up your new habit hook ideas? We provide that in our member area along with the expert help from our organizing team. You can find out more at clutterdiet.com/learnmore.

See you next time, and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.

You may have been searching for how to create new habits that stick.

Lori – thanks for all your tips, I love them. I REALLY love your little napkin tip about hanging cloth napkins on the back of the chair…I have small children and had tried being more ‘green’ with cloth napkins, but when we put them away it could end up being pretty gross….GREAT TIP!! Thanks!!
