Hi. I’m Lorie Marrero, creator of the Clutter Diet book and on-line program, and today, I am standing before you in front of my giant blank wall. I had a big mirror hanging here before, and, you know, it just wasn’t working. It was hung at a height that was cutting off my head every time I walked by. If I needed to check my earrings or something I had to bend down, and it felt funny. So I didn’t like it, and I decided I wanted to take the mirror out, and I did. I don’t know what’s going to be in place of this mirror yet, but I’m living with the blank wall until I find it. And that is my lesson for you today.

Sometimes, when you’re doing your interior design or your organizing project, you don’t have the puzzle all figured out ahead of time. Sometimes, all you can do is take one step. And a lot of times what that step is would be removing something. So if it’s a sofa that has the spring sticking out of it, or if it’s a table with a crooked leg or a broken leg on it, or whatever it is, don’t live with that stuff. Don’t make do. You deserve better. Remove that. Sell it on Craigslist. Donate it. Put it on Freecycle or whatever you need to do to get that out of your life first. Live with the space, live with the emptiness, because that will make your mind conscious that it needs to fill that space. It’s like creating a vacuum so that it can be filled.

Now when I’m out, and I’m noticing how my friends decorate their homes or if I’m out in a museum or a public place or if I’m shopping or whatever, I’m noticing, “Oh, that might be something I could do there on that black wall.” So, you do the same. So, what could you remove, what action could you take, what one step could you do this week to solve what you think of as an unsolvable problem in your house?
